Day Five Hundred and Fourteen - Big Mosquito


I think this is some kind of huge mosquito... Looks like it means business to me!

    Not actually a mosquito but rather a cooler thing called an Stilt-legged Fly, in the insect family Micropezidae.

    A friend of mine studies this group of insects. I will ask if he knows this species... or if it (like many) are new to science. Philip

  5. It's a relief to hear it's not a mosquito! I think that a local Amerindian had called it a mosquito, but it sure looks different. Thanks for the link... and for the reason to have a good second look!

  6. Hi James, great shot! What you've found is a female Scipopus species from the family Micropezidae. There's very little known about the biology of these flies, but I can assure you that it won't be out for your blood! Females often feed on rotting fruits or dung, and males are often nearby to find a mate "at the bar"! Watch for elaborate mating rituals next time you chance across some monkey splatter!
