Sweet Photo! Not actually a mosquito but rather a cooler thing called an Stilt-legged Fly, in the insect family Micropezidae. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micropezidae A friend of mine studies this group of insects. I will ask if he knows this species... or if it (like many) are new to science. Philip
It's a relief to hear it's not a mosquito! I think that a local Amerindian had called it a mosquito, but it sure looks different. Thanks for the link... and for the reason to have a good second look!
Hi James, great shot! What you've found is a female Scipopus species from the family Micropezidae. There's very little known about the biology of these flies, but I can assure you that it won't be out for your blood! Females often feed on rotting fruits or dung, and males are often nearby to find a mate "at the bar"! Watch for elaborate mating rituals next time you chance across some monkey splatter!
James, definitivamente son unas fotografias hermosas, sorprendentes. Te felicito por tan bellas imagenes, son de un artista.
ReplyDeleteThat's a scary insect! I wouldn't want that landing on me :-)
