Hmmm... Thanks for all the praise, but... a step to the left and you'd be able to see that there is a waterfall into the valley, making more sense of the background... and don't you think a bit of eye contact from the subject would make this jump out from the screen?
'But' right back atcha! Waterfall would complicate and distract the eye. Definitely not on the eye contact- it would evoke much less powerfully the backbreaking labour of hauling soil and water to sift (he'd have given you a beaming grin and it would suddenly look much more like other shots in your back catalogue). It's most intense and telling exactly as it is.
