Day One Hundred and Eighty - Hummingbird Chick
Back to the hummingbird nest - sadly I wasn't there long enough to get the hummingbird feeding the chicks.

how do they manage to brood the chicks? I thought they had to be always eating?
ReplyDeleteI think the 'eating' thing is a popular myth. There is some fact about the energy they use for flying which means they have to refuel at a high rate, but they don't need so much at rest. They spend quite a lot of time at rest, and can store enough energy to rest overnight when they are not moving - but when flying their heartbeat goes over 1000bpm, even more than Lance Armstrong on the Tour de France! The wingbeat can be up to 100 beats/sec which means that it's hard to get a crisp shot of one in flight!
ReplyDeletethere are some pics when you open them you let out an intelligable ahh! not aww but wowah. This happened just now so has got to be a great pic. Win
ReplyDeleteIthinksometimes you have to ignore the technical analysis of the pic when the subject is so amazing. Thanks for going back (assumming this is the same nest as before)Is it?
